Have you ever wondered about where local place names come from?

Learning about place names is a fascinating and rewarding exercise no matter what age you are. Names like like Donemark Sheskin, Reenrour, Ardnageehy, Cahernacrin, and Knockanecosduff.

Place names are links between people and their locality and environment, and also links between past and present generations. We make places out of the land and space around us by giving them a name. They speak to us across the ages with lessons in language, history, geography and culture.

Bantry Historical and Archaeological Society is hosting a talk by Dan Sullivan on the topic on the 21st September at 8pm in the Christian Fellowship. There will be an opportunity to discuss and debate place names of interest, and will certainly hear more than a cúpla focal which are key to understanding our lifelong attachment to our own holy ground.

All are welcome.
