An avoidable disaster

Forty years ago, on the morning of November 24th, 1986, the 169, 000 DWT MV Kowloon Bridge grounded off the Stags Rocks, south of Toe Head, Co. Cork. Her subsequent breakup and sinking caused severe oil pollution damage to the coastline and marine life mainly between Roaring Water Bay and the Galley Head. Inexplicably no formal investigation or regulatory review was ever held as to how a storm-damaged ship was allowed to leave her port of refuge in Bantry Bay and put to sea during a violent storm.

We are hosting a talk by Captain Sean O’Mahony on the topic on the 19th October at 8pm in the Christian Fellowship.

All are welcome.

For the last 14 years he has worked on the legal side as a maritime arbitrator and consultant.
