Inventor of the Modern Submarine

and Bantry’s connection

Liz O Mahony (nee Holland) discussed the links to the local area, of Bantry-born John Holland Snr, and his son John Philip Holland. The latter was born just before the Great Famine in 1841, and went on to become the Inventor of the Modern Submarine.

John Jr’s interest in under-sea craft led to him becoming the most influential pioneer of Submarine technology of the early 20th century.

In 2024, an information board was erected by the Spirit of Love garden beside the Abbey Cemetary to highlight the Bantry connection.
