In 2018 Bantry Historical Society celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding
Bantry Historical & Archaeological Society is a vibrant and progressive local history society based in Bantry, and covering the town of Bantry and its large hinterland. The Society was founded at a meeting held in Bantry Library on Friday 10th March 1978 and was named Bantry Historical & Archaeological Society, conveniently referred to as Bantry Historical Society.
We launched a new journal to mark the anniversary – Journal Volume Three, edited by Dr Colum Hourihane, which has proved exceptionally popular.
As part of the ongoing celebrations, our Bantry Through the Ages exhibition is designed to show some of the achievements of the society to date, and highlight some of our local heritage.
The exhibition consists of five panels of data and images. It chronicles much of the activities of the society during the past 40 years, including Bantry Museum which was one of the principal aims of the society at its founding.
The exhibition is on display at Bantry Library for Heritage Week 2021, and continuing intermittantly thereafter. We are grateful to Bantry Library for affording us this gallery space.
